When to buy medical travel insurance

Best time to buy medical travel insurance

Any kind of trip or holiday away from home requires planning, but if you have a pre-existing medical condition or disability, you may have more to organise than other travellers.

Securing specialist travel insurance that covers your particular condition or disability before you go is a must, but when is the right time to think about buying cover?

When is the best time to buy specialist travel insurance cover?

With Free Spirit, the answer to this question is simple. Because we offer cancellation cover that starts the moment your policy is in place*, you will be covered for any accommodation or travel expenses that you’ve already paid, should you become too unwell before your trip begins (please read the policy for terms and conditions).

This is why we urge you to organise medical travel insurance as soon as your trip is booked. We can also cover your travelling companions on the same policy, whether or not they also have pre-existing health conditions or disabilities. That way, we can cover you all in the event that you need to cancel your trip, right up until your departure date.

Don’t be tempted to wait until just before you are due to travel to book your medical travel insurance. Getting it secured as soon as your travel plans are decided means you have the travel protection in place just in case you have to cancel your holiday.

* Please note, if you purchase an Annual Multi-trip policy, the cover begins on the date you choose to start the policy. If you have already booked your trip, it is best to start the policy straight away to ensure you are covered for cancellation.

What are the options for travel insurance for medical conditions?

The type of cover you need will depend on the kind of trip you are planning to take and how long you will be away. At Free Spirit, we offer medical travel insurance for single trips and annual multi-trips, both with two levels of cover – Super and Super Duper.

With Free Spirit specialist travel insurance, we aim to cover virtually all existing medical conditions and disabilities, and we impose no age limit.

Single trip travel insurance for medical conditions

If you are going away for a one-off holiday, a business trip or for a last-minute couple of weeks in the sun, Free Spirit single trip travel insurance may be ideal for you. As long as you are away for less than 94 days (or 45 days if you are 76 years of age or over) as part of one trip, single trip cover should be suitable.

Sometimes, if you have an existing health condition or disability, it can be easier to get medical travel insurance for a single trip than an annual multi-trip policy. Read the full terms and conditions of our single trip specialist travel insurance.

Annual multi-trip travel insurance for medical conditions

Our annual multi-trip travel insurance is designed for those of any age looking to take more than one trip in a year. Each of your trips must be no longer than 31 days with Super cover, or no longer than 45 days with Super Duper cover. You can take as many trips within a year as you like, providing you come home in between each one and none of the trips is longer than 31 or 45 days.

With our annual multi-trip cover, you can choose to delay the starting date of your policy by up to 31 days of taking out the insurance, but it is important to note that you will not be covered for cancellation costs until your policy is effective.

‘Super’ and ‘Super Duper’ levels of medical travel insurance

Both Super and Super Duper levels of cover provide recompense in the event of you having to cancel your holiday before you go due to ill health; up to £2,500 per person covered with Super cover and up to £5,000 per person covered with Super Duper cover.

Take a look at our summary of cover to see all the differences between our Super and Super Duper levels of medical travel insurance cover.
