UK walking holidays are a delightful option – especially when you wish to challenge yourself on holiday. A walking mini-break may improve your health too. Also, practicing mindfulness while walking down picturesque paths and beautiful bridleways can enhance your mood.
Escape for a gentle weekend break or a two-week hike and you’ll soon build up your stamina. This is one of the many great health benefits of walking. However, while planning a walking holiday in the UK always remember your limitations.
As May is National Walking Month and spring is a beautiful time to embrace nature, we wanted to share our favourite UK walking holidays with you for inspiration.
Walking Holidays for Beginners
UK walking holidays for beginners are usually tailored to your abilities. They’re shorter walks that give you time to explore an area. Walking on the flat and filling your day with interesting routes is a breath of fresh air. Literally! For your first walking holiday follow sections of the Hadrian’s Wall Path and walk through the rugged, remote countryside. Soon you’ll be transported back in time to Roman Britain, as you pass turrets and Roman forts.
For an accessible trail, start at Chester’s Roman Fort in Chollerford and walk the 8.5 miles to the remains of Housesteads Roman Fort. Visit a visitor centre and museum to learn about the Romans. With the fort in an elevated position to fend off raiding parties, the views aren’t that bad either!
Coastal Walking Breaks
North Norfolk
A walking break along the North Norfolk coast is ideal because it’s quite flat. It’s also full of character at every turn. Complete a self-guided circular walk of the seaside town of Sheringham with your route planner in your back pocket. On an eight-mile walk, you can explore the area’s coastline, farmland, diverse woodlands, and heath, while spotting local wildlife overhead.
