Cerebral Palsy Travel Insurance
If you have Cerebral Palsy it shouldn’t stop you from travelling abroad and enjoying a holiday, however, you will need to plan in advance by ensuring you have a travel insurance policy that covers your medical condition.
Free Spirit travel insurance is a fully comprehensive policy with all the key features you would expect for your peace of mind and a hassle-free holiday. We were the first scheme of its type dedicated to people that had been declined cover elsewhere due to their health and we are now one of the UK’s largest specialist travel insurance providers.
Why is it important to cover my Cerebral Palsy?
As long as your doctor or consultant have agreed you are fit to travel and provided you’re not awaiting surgery or further investigations, we will aim to offer an insurance quotation to cover not just your cerebral palsy but any other associated medical conditions that you may have.
Cancellation and emergency medical expenses cover
You will be covered for a minimum of £5 million of emergency medical expenses, so should you be unfortunate to require medical treatment while on holiday, you won’t have to bear the cost. In the event you lose or damage your prescribed cerebral palsy medication, this will also be covered*.
If you need to cancel your holiday due to your insured medical conditions, Free Spirit can provide cover for your unused travel and accommodation costs that you have already paid for or are contracted to pay*
*subject to policy terms and conditions
Consequences of not covering your Cerebral Palsy medical condition
Failing to include your cerebral palsy condition on your travel insurance could leave you open to paying out for expensive medical treatment and hospital costs; these could run into thousands of pounds. Unlike standard travel insurance policies that often exclude cover for pre-existing medical conditions, Free Spirit can provide cover for your cerebral palsy and any associated medical conditions to give you the protection you need when you travel.
If you have a carer or need cover for travelling companions whether they have a pre-existing medical condition or not, including them on the same Free Spirit policy will ensure you are all covered. If you had to cancel your holiday due to your cerebral palsy, insured persons on the same policy would also be covered which may not be the case if they had taken out a separate policy elsewhere.
What causes cerebral palsy?
Cerebral palsy is a condition that affects muscle control and movement. It is usually caused by an injury to the brain before, during or after birth and children with cerebral palsy have difficulties in controlling muscles and movements as they grow and develop.
There may be no obvious single reason why a person has cerebral palsy, however, the main causes could include:
- Infection in the early part of pregnancy
- Lack of oxygen to the brain
- Abnormal brain development
What can increase the chances of cerebral palsy?
- Difficult or premature birth
- Twins or multiple birth
- Mother’s age being below 20 or over 40
- Father under 20 years
- First child or fifth (or more) child
- Premature birth (less than 37 weeks)
Types of cerebral palsy
There are three main types of cerebral palsy and it is not uncommon for people to have a mixture of all three – spastic cerebral palsy, dyskinetic cerebral palsy and ataxic cerebral palsy.
No two people with cerebral palsy are affected in the same way as some have cerebral palsy so mildly that it’s barely noticeable. Others may be profoundly affected and require help with many or all aspects of daily life.
Some people with cerebral palsy may also have one or more of the following conditions:
- Learning difficulty
- Communication difficulties
- Feeding difficulties
- Problems with toileting
- Behaviour issues
- Periventricular leukomalacia
