Kidney Transplant Travel Insurance
Can I go on holiday after a kidney transplant?
One of the benefits of kidney transplants is the fact that you do not need to have dialysis when away on holiday. A relaxing holiday with family and friends has to be one of the most exciting prospects following your transplantation.
If you have had a kidney transplant, or even a transplant involving more than one major organ, it may have been some time since you were able to travel abroad for a holiday. It is understandable if you felt slightly anxious or even nervous about travelling abroad, this is only natural.
It is not generally recommended to travel abroad within the first year however, provided you take precautions to reduce your exposure to infections, there is no reason why you can’t travel thereafter although check with your GP first. Just remember, if you are travelling outside Western European countries, the risk of Hepatitis B and other infections is greater and these could pose a threat to your health. For example, try and use bottled water at all times.
Is it necessary to buy specialist travel cover for kidney transplants?
You will want to know that should something happen to you when away you can get the medical treatment you need. What if you failed to purchase adequate existing medical condition travel insurance though?
Well, you could be left paying an expensive hospital bill if you had a medical emergency while travelling. Most countries will charge for hospital treatment, so don’t expect the same service you receive at home. Also if you don’t have a 24 hour medical emergency helpline to call, how will you know where to go for medical assistance?
Free Spirit can provide you with significant cover benefits such as:
- Emergency medical expenses up to £15,000,000*
- Medical emergency helpline available to you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
- Cancellation or Curtailment/Loss of holiday cover up to £5,000*
- Loss or damage to medical aids up to £2,000*
- Loss of damage to prescribed medications £500*
- Repatriation to your home country is automatically included
- Personal money & documents £1,000*
- Personal baggage cover up to £3,000*
- Missed departure / missed connection £1,500*
* with ‘Super Duper’ cover
Whoever you choose to travel with, whether it is friends, relatives or even a carer it is always a good idea to include them on your Free Spirit policy whether they have a existing medical condition or not. If you had to cancel your trip because of your transplant, all insured persons could also claim for their holiday costs which may not be the case if you all had separate travel insurance policies.
Getting the best holiday insurance for kidney transplants
Every traveller has their own unique insurance requirements, particularly when it comes to their health. As specialists in travel insurance, Free Spirit covers a wide range of post-surgery conditions including kidney transplants.
Many standard travel insurance policies exclude cover for serious surgical procedures such as kidney transplants or will decline to offer cover. It is vital to check the policy wordings to make 100% sure you have the right cover for you and your travelling companions.
Your local GP will need to agree you are fit to travel and provided you’re not awaiting surgery or further investigations, Free Spirit will aim to offer you a quotation.
At Free Spirit, we pride ourselves on being flexible with our medical screening process and our specialist insurance has been designed for people like you. We are confident that we can help you obtain the necessary cover for that extra peace of mind protection!
Why not try us today and get a quote
Obtaining an online quote couldn’t be easier as we can provide you with a simple to use online medical screening service that you can use at your leisure.
We will also ask you all the necessary questions to enable you to declare any other associated medical conditions you may have. It is vital that you declare all of your medical conditions as otherwise you may not be fully covered.
If you decide to set up a quote and purchase online, you will need to answer some questions about your kidney transplant. Here are some examples:
- Are you currently on dialysis?
- How long is it since you had your transplant?
- Have you had any episodes of rejection within the last year?
- Was the kidney donated by a living donor (for example, a family member)?
- Have you been admitted to hospital in the last 12 months for treatment related to your transplant?
Should you need any help whilst getting a quote or if you have any questions not covered by our frequently asked questions page, our dedicated UK based customer services team are on hand to help you.
