Free Spirit understands how beneficial foreign travel can be to people suffering from Alzheimer’s and we believe it certainly shouldn’t stop you and your family from enjoying a holiday. If you are looking to book a holiday, you will need to plan in advance and ensure you have a travel insurance policy that covers your medical conditions.
Free Spirit travel insurance is there to provide you with cover for cancellation before you go and for emergency medical expenses whilst you are away.
If you need to cancel your holiday prior to travelling due to your Alzheimer’s, Free Spirit can cover your unused travel and accommodation costs. If you are unfortunate enough to have a medical emergency during your holiday, any associated costs including medical repatriation (if medically necessary) as a result of your Alzheimer’s – or any other illness related to it will also be covered (subject to policy terms and conditions).
If you are caring for someone living with Alzheimer’s and need to travel with them – travelling companions can also be covered on Free Spirit, whether they have a pre-existing medical condition or not. If you had to cancel your holiday due to your Alzheimer’s, travelling companions on the same policy would also be covered which may not be the case if they had taken out a separate policy elsewhere.
Travelling abroad should be an enjoyable and relaxing experience. However, someone with Alzheimer’s might find a new environment confusing and may cause undue distress. A travel companion may be so concerned about giving the person with Alzheimer’s a good holiday, that they forget to relax and enjoy the holiday themselves. For these reasons, it is important to think carefully about the type of holiday that suits everyone.
With a Free Spirit medical travel insurance policy, you gain the peace of mind to travel knowing that you and your medical condition are fully covered.
Failing to insure your Alzheimer’s could leave you open to paying out for expensive medical treatment and hospital accommodation costs in the event of a medical emergency. Some standard travel insurance policies exclude cover for pre-existing medical conditions. No matter what stage your illness has reached, Free Spirit can in most cases provide cover for your Alzheimer’s and any associated medical conditions to give you the peace of mind protection you need when you travel – just in case!
People enjoy a wide range of holidays, depending on their interests, personal preferences, and time available. The extent to which the person’s Alzheimer’s affects their daily life will also determine the type of holiday that is most suitable.
Booking independently offers you the greatest choice and flexibility and may be suitable for someone with early stages of Alzheimer’s. You will be able to make your own travel arrangements and choose the best accommodation. By booking independently you could choose to stay in a smaller hotel that can offer you a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Travelling outside a school holiday is always a good idea, everyone will be less rushed and can give you more time and attention.
Whatever type of holiday you choose, try to find out as much as you can beforehand about the place you intend to visit. If someone in your party has a physical disability consider:
People with Alzheimer’s who are generally independent in familiar surroundings may need extra support when coping with a new environment or changes to their routine. Even if they are travelling with a companion, the holiday may be more enjoyable for everyone if another friend or relative comes too.
