Why "Europe" Means Something Different on a Travel Insurance Policy

Insurers define Europe by area, not by continent. This means that some countries may not geographically be in Europe but are classed as such for Travel Insurance and vice versa. You should always check whether your destination is classed as Europe or not. If you take out a European policy but you’re travelling to a country deemed as outside of that area, you will not be covered.

How Insurers Draw the Europe Boundary

Why Choosing the Wrong Area can Leave you Without Cover

If you travel outside of the area you have chosen when buying insurance, a claim from that country may be declined. This is because policies are risk assessed based on the area you have chosen. For example, some countries allow you to use a GHIC card while others do not. It also means that you would be outside of the boundaries your insurance covers you for.

Europe or Worldwide Travel Insurance: Which Do You Need?

Choosing which level and area of cover you need can be confusing. Make sure you check the destinations you’re going to against the areas on your policy to ensure you are fully covered.

Multi-Country Trips and Cruises

Sometimes your trip may involve visiting several different countries. This could be because you’re taking a road trip or on a cruise for example. When getting a quote for a single trip policy, you need to make sure you add each country you will be visiting. There is no limit on the number of countries you can add. This is just to ensure you have full cover wherever you are on your trip.

Choosing an Area for Annual Multi-Trip Cover

If you are planning to travel more than once in a year you may wish to consider an annual multi-trip travel insurance. When getting a quote for a year’s policy, you only need to select your area of travel. The options for this are either United Kingdom only, Europe, Worldwide excluding the USA/Canada/Caribbean or Worldwide Including the USA/Canada/Caribbean. You should check the policy area covers your destinations when you get a quote.

Can You Use a GHIC in Turkey, Egypt or Morocco?

The GHIC card is valid in EU countries and Switzerland. This means that it works in Cyprus (not Northern Cyprus), Madeira and the Canary Islands but not in Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia or Israel. Please remember that a GHIC card is not a replacement for travel insurance. While it can offer discounted or sometimes free healthcare abroad, it will not cover repatriation if you need to be brought home. Nor will it cover cancellation costs if you’re unwell and can no longer go on your trip for example. Even with a GHIC card, you should still take out suitable travel insurance.

Travelling to Europe with a Medical Condition

Even if you have a medical condition, you shouldn’t rule out travel. Free Spirit’s travel insurance is designed to cover people with pre-existing medical conditions. There is no upper age limit for most destinations, and we can cover most medical conditions. You can get a quote online and complete the medical screening yourself or call our friendly UK call centre on 02392 419080 where we will run through a quote with you.
