Encephalitis International has been one of our partners since July 2022, after our Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Customer Services Manager went to Encephalitis International ’s Changemakers event in Mayfair.
After understanding what encephalitis is and Encephalitis International’s mission, the Free Spirit team have continued to support the charity and the work it does for people living with encephalitis.
What is Encephalitis and Encephalitis International ?
Encephalitis is a serious neurological condition. It’s caused by an infection – or through the immune system attacking the brain. The consequences are death or, living with an acquired brain injury. Plus, life-changing concerns. Anyone can be affected at any time and death rates are high. Yet, there’s a lack of public and healthcare professional awareness of the condition.
Encephalitis International’s mission is to change this, rebuilding future around the world by saving lives, accelerating awareness and driving research.
As a non-profit authority, Encephalitis International leads the way with its vision. Also, its core values (passionate, inclusive, and changemakers), shape its work, culture, and who they want to partner with. Last July they partnered with Free Spirit Travel Insurance.
How the Free Spirit team support Encephalitis International
The BrainWalk Challenge
In February seven members of the team embarked on the BrainWalk Challenge in aid of Encephalitis International . The aim of the event was to walk, jog or run as many steps as possible throughout the month of February.
Dubbed the P J H Plodders our ambitions team put their best foot forward to take 750,000 steps by the end of the month (the shortest month of the year!). Throughout February they embraced the elements, while on their lunch break or in their spare time. By making every step count, together they took a staggering 143,454,8 steps to smash their target. Plus, they raised £750 (+ £140.88 Gift Aid) in aid of Encephalitis International.

In October our Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Customer Services Manager went to Encephalitis International’s ’s latest Changemakers event at Killik & Co in Mayfair. They learnt about the charity’s latest work and plans for World Encephalitis Day 2024 – its campaign and appeal Don’t Delay: Give Today.
By the 22nd of February (World Encephalitis Day) the charity’s appeal aims to raise £40,000 towards their work to train medical professionals globally about encephalitis. To engage the public with this appeal, Encephalitis International is showcasing the impact delayed diagnosis is having on the lives of those affected and their family members.
